🌎The Wheelie Big Challenge 🌎

3rd Oct 2024

The Eco council had a great time participating in the Wheelie Big Challenge Workshop this week. They learned about the different kinds of waste - food waste, recyclable waste and non-recyclable waste. The children got their hands dirty completing a survey of a sample of bins from across the school. They sorted the rubbish into piles and weighed how much was in each bin. Over the next few months we will work hard to reduce the waste we produce in school and see if the weight of our waste improves. Below are some of the facts the children learned during the workshop.

Did you know?
- In Northern Ireland alone around one third of food waste ends up in the landfill!
- It takes 450 years for a single use plastic water bottle to break down and 30 years for a single use coffee cup!
- A survey of dead birds found on the north coast of Ireland found them to have on average 40 pieces of plastic in their stomach!

Don’t worry the Eco council will be sharing this information in assembly soon and talking about some ways we can help reduce, reuse and recycle in school, at home and within our wider community.
